FLORIDA POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY

Published • 07/27/2026

Conceived as a campus for the next generation of innovators, Florida Polytechnic University is an architectural expression of curiosity, precision, and possibility. Its skeletal canopy and luminous central oculus transform engineering into something that feels almost weightless.

Santiago Calatrava is an architect renowned for designing structures that blur the boundary between architecture, engineering, and sculpture. His work is defined by movement, rhythm, and an enduring pursuit of forms inspired by the natural world.

FIELD NOTE 01 / / TEXTURE

Texture - multi faceted. Sometimes it has a ribbed, almost feathered pattern... at times it feels like the tentacles of an octopus sprawling, at others it feel like a waterfall of material spilling out from the center…

FIELD NOTE 02 / / PROPORTION

As you move through...everything changes...the exterior is nothing like what’s beneath the "umbrella." The shape often makes me feel like I’m looking at what should be Spectre's headquarters from James Bond...

From the sky or ground this building is definitely the focal point. And because of the various student facilities surrounding it, students are forced to take notice even if they didn’t want to...

FIELD NOTE 03 / / CONTEXT

FIELD NOTE 04 / / ATMOSPHERE

From the outside, you’re looking at an attraction. Move closer, now it’s an art installation.
And once underneath, you’re pleasantly trapped...

If innovation is supposed to take place here, there’s probably no better symbol that can inspire the curiosity needed. Every angle provides something new... It’s never finished...

FIELD NOTE 05 / / CURIOSITY
